We are in the Alta Murgia region, the stony heart of Puglia, described in the thoughtful words of Ferdinand Gregorovius, a German historian and medievalist. Characterized by a spectacular succession of rocky ridges, rolling hills, karst cavities, sinkholes and chasms, steep escarpments, forests, and vast natural pastures, it has seen the perennial influence of nature intertwine with the millennia-old influence of man.
In particular, the Murgiano Plateau is an area very rich in karst formations, but also in more recent rock formations, such as tuff and clay sacks, sands, as well as alluvial earthy and pebbly deposits, dating back to the last geological era, which mixed with humus and red earth make the soil perfect for cultivation.
A natural treasure that received the most important and well-deserved recognition in 1998, when the Alta Murgia National Park was established. In the Murgia area, the municipality with the oldest winemaking tradition is Gravina in Puglia, as its historic motto, "Grana dat et Vina," attests. Here, nestled between the Bosco Difesa Grande protected natural area and the Bradano Valley, lies the COLLI DELLA MURGIA.
